Hello.

So yesterday I got my first negative feedback on Etsy. I was really sad, but mostly because I think it was unfair and that kind of hurts when the person who is giving you the feedback is someone you've really talked to.
She said that it took her a month to receive the item. When I receive new orders, I always make sure I contact the person to let her know when she will be receiving the item, depending on the amount of work I have at the time. She ordered the item on September 27th after dinner and I immediately told her it would take me about a week to get to her item. I shipped it on October 10th and unfortunately for me, it took the post about 10 days to deliver it to her, which is completely beyond my control. But anyway, we exchanged several messages during this period and she never mentioned she thought it was taking longer than expected.

Second issue, she said the item was much smaller than described. I describe it as being about 17 inches long, she said it was about 12 inches. This I have to say, freaked me out.
Because I admit I don't measure it in the end before shipping it, but I do measure it when I cut the fabric, and it is always the same amount, obviously, so I am completely in aww that it could suddenly shrink 5 inches without me noticing it! But still, I accept returns, exchanges, refunds, the works, she could have contacted me, as she did so many times during this process and I would gladly have made her a new one, if she felt is wasn't up to par.

So now I'm trying to decide whether I should contact her and try to understand what happened or just leave it alone and move on. I have so little feedback, I haven't had that many etsy purchases and even fewer feedback, it was really desolating for me.

I'm sorry, maybe I shouldn't bring this up on the blog, but really, where else can I express this and maybe ask for advice on how to proceed? My blog is my craft (and sometimes non.craft) diary :)

What should I have done differently? What do you think I should do? Any thoughts?

I've ran out of  tags for some time now. It is amazing to see how much more resources I've spent these last few months than in the entire year of 2011. Fabric, tags, you name it!

A great "present" I got today were my brand new labels. I found an amazing Etsy artist that combined all I was looking for: being european to spare me the hassles of having to deal with bureaucratic delays; had to be creative and help me sort what I wanted and what would work the best; be nice enough to deal with all my inquiries and crazy ideas; and have first class products that would really add something new and beautiful to my work.

My very first Treasury list :)

It's been a hard week and it kills me to have to choose between blogging or sewing, such is the crazy schedule I've been on. Working 7 days a week is really taking it's toll.
Anyway, just thought I'd pop by to share with you two more treasuries that feature my SandyOwn pieces amongst other incredible ones.

This one is food-theemed and was picked by the amazing LousisestArt. I've discovered I will love anything featuring fried eggs, they are just so cute!! Amazing pictures in general.



This one is, as you can see, all loved up :) I love it! MamiMadeIt, thank you!

I particularly love that they always pick different items. Apart from the bunting, each treasury has a different SandyOwn item. I love it!

And speaking of said bunting, I actually needed a Valentine's decoration for the shop (the shop I own in Lisbon, the gift shop), and so I replicated the bunting and it looks something like this. Truly, this picture was taken like a minute ago, it's practically live footage ;)

Remember the fabrics I ordered that I was so excited about and then when they finally arrived, two of them were MIA and another one had been sent instead? Well the correct ones have just arrived :)

Lembram-se dos tecidos que encomendei e que estava tão entusiasmada mas depois quando chegaram, dois deles não vieram e em vez deles mandaram outro diferente? Bem, os tecidos certos acabaram de chegar:)

Already I'm having very mixed feelings between wanting to make something with them and not wanting to cut them.
This makes a total of 6 bolts of fabric I've bought this year, so I hope this should keep my busy for some time, unless it sells out on Etsy and then I'll just have to buy more fabrics, how great would that be? :)
The Wall Flower from Amy Butler's Lotus collection is so precious!! And it costs more too!

I'm becoming more and more convinced that I would be very happy to live among fabric :)
These fabrics shoul be listed on my Etsy Shop shortly. I'm loving that I get to add a couple of things to the list everyday. Makes me happy to see I actually manage to find some time to do things I love, makes the burden a little less heavy.

The Glamour Goddess Aprons ::: Os Aventais Glamour Goddess

I have finally managed to photograph these aprons I’ve been making since last week.

Here’s the thing. I love to cook, and I also love retro looking dresses, but can’t really wear them in my everyday’s life. Oh, and I hate most aprons, particularly those plastic ones, they are hideous! I usually go without and my clothes usually pay the price for that…

When I got my fabrics all I could think of was the best way to use a lot of them, to make them shine and stand out. Quilts are great, but usually you only get to see small portions of each fabric and these babies deserved a better premiere project.
So I immediately thought of aprons. Lovely aprons, aprons that will make you want to do something just so you can wear them. And these were born:


Finalmente consegui fotografar estes aventais que tenho vindo a fazer desde a semana passada.
A ideia é, eu adoro cozinhas, e adoro vestidos de look retro, mas não posso usá-los no me dia-a-dia. Ah, e detesto a maioria dos aventais, especialmente os plastificados, são horríveis! Normalmente não uso aventais de todo e as minhas roupas é que pagam…


Quando recebi os meus tecidos só conseguia pensar na melhor forma de os usar, de os destacar e de os fazer brilhar. Os quilts são óptimos, mas normalmente só temos pequenas porções de cada tecido e estes mereciam um projecto melhor para a sua estreia.
Imediatamente pensei em aventais. Lindos, que nos dão vontade de fazer algo apenas para os podermos usar. E estes foram criados:

With these projects I've had so many firsts! The first time I made anything remotely similar to clothing! The first ruffles, the first pleats, it was just SO MUCH FUN! I may have found a new addiction…

What I've been doing lately :: O que ando a fazer

I've just realised that it's been a while since I've posted anything sewing related. I must admit I miss quilting very much, but I have been sewing, just not quilting!
I've made 3 approns, of which I hope to have photographic evidence by tonight, if the model will cooperate ;).It was great using my brand new fabrics, they are just lovely to look at. But more on that later.

Also, there is this expression I heard last week, which for you english-speaking people is probably an oldie but for me was so inspiring! Something in the lines of "love me, love my pet". Well, I have to say this expression defines me. Me and my cats are a package deal, you want one, you'll have to love us all (obviously not in the same way, but you know what I mean).

Anyway, I decided to make some cute funny appliqués to that effect and list them on my Etsy Shop.
I have to say cutting out letters is hard, particularly small ones, I tried the freezer paper technique so I could print them and then just cut it out, but it didn't really work... I am SO thinking of getting a Accuquilt Go! but, of course, it's nowhere near arriving in Portugal, so I'd have to get it online and the shipping fees must not help. But it would save me SO MUCH TIME!! I'm really considering it, do you think I can ask it as a Birthday present? It is a big birthday right?
Well, here it is, I've listed the first one and I'll be listing the next ones over the next few hours, so you've seen it first!

Hoje apercebi-me que já há algum tempo que não escrevo nada relativo à costura. Devo admitir que sinto saudades de quilting, tenho andado a coser, mas não é quilting!
Fiz 3 aventais, dos quais espero ter provas fotográficas hoje, se o modelo colaborar ;). Foi óptimo usar os meus novos tecidos, são lindos. Mas mais acerca disto mais tarde.

Para além disto, há uma expressão que ouvi na semana passada, que para todos os que falam inglês já deve ser antiga mas para mim inspirou-me! Algo do tipo "love me love my pet". Bem, tenho que dizer que esta expressão define-me. Eu e os meus gatos somos vimos em pack, se me querem, têm que adorar os meus gatos (bem, não da mesma maneira obviamente, mas percebem a ideia).


De qualquer das formas, decidi fazer estes apliques giros e listá-los na minha loja do Etsy. Devo dizer que cortar letras é difícil, especialmente quando são pequenas, tentei freezer paper para as poder imprimir e depois cortar, mas não funcionou... tenho TANTA vontade de comprar uma Accuquilt go! mas, claro, não existe em Portugal nem deve chegar brevemente, por isso teria q a comprar online e os custos de envio não devem ajudar. Mas poupar-me-ia TANTO TEMPO!! Estou mesmo a considerar, acham que posso pedir como presente de Aniversário? É um aniversário importante, certo?


Bem, aqui está. Listei a primeira e vou listar as restantes durante as próximas horas, portanto viram-nas em primeiro lugar!

They all have thermal adhesive in the back so you can just iron it on really, no need for sewing.  I'm keeping one for me, I'll just have to choose where to appliqué it. A T-shirt maybe? A pillow? Decisions Decisions...

Têm todos adesivo termocolante por isso basta passar a ferro, sem ter que se coser. Vou ficar com uma para mim, resta-me decidir onde as vou aplicar. Numa T-shirt? Numa almofada? Decisões difíceis...

Here is my first item sold ready to go on its merry way. I must admit I was unprepared, no packaging logistics put in place, I must be more prepared next time.
Yes, the black fur in the corner is Mushi, she's my logistics supervisor... Well she's my supervisor for everything she's always watching everything I do, keeps me honest! hehehe.

I was very happy to find out that I own buttons to match every single fabric I sell! So I decided to gift my very first client with a couple.

Aqui está o meu primeiro artigo vendido, já pronto para seguir o seu caminho. Devo admitir que não estava preparada, não tinha nenhuma logistica para empacotar e preparar a embalagem, terei que estar melhor preparada para a próxima.
Sim, o pelo preto no canto é a Mushi, ela é a minha supervisora de logistica... Bem, ela é a minha supervisora para tudo, está sempre a observar tudo o que eu faço, mantém-me honesta! hehehe.

Fiquei feliz por descobrir que tenho botões que dão com todos os tecidos que vendo, por isso decidi oferecer alguns à minha primeira cliente.

Spring has arrived!!! ::: A Primavera chegou!!!

Well... no... not really.
It's actually getting colder and colder. I got out of the house at 4ºC this morning. Granted, I know a lot of you are getting snow and below zero temperatures, but we're a freakin mediterranean country ok? We're not supposed to freeze! We're the country people from up north visit and walk around in t-shirts during winter time!!! Well, not right now!

But that's beside the point. The point is, yesterday I had some lovely fabrics waiting for me and they are ALL about the spring!

Bem, não, nem por isso.
Aliás, está cada vez mais frio, saí de casa esta manhã e estavam 4ºC. Eu sei que onde muitos de vocês estão está a nevar e têm temperaturas negativas, mas eu estou num país no mediterrâneo, ok? Não é suposto congelarmos! Estou num país que as pessoas do norte visitam e usam t-shirts durante o Inverno!! Bem, não neste momento!

Mas pronto, a questão não é essa. A questão é que ontem tinha tecidos lindos à minha espera e são totalmente primaveris.

Granted, the order was all messed up. I did not order Amy Butler's Cypress Paisley in Lime, I ordered it in Red and another lovely Wall Flower in sky from the Lotus collection, I was kind of bummed...
But now I think it all goes really well together, so I'll just wait and see if it was fate.
There is another Amy Butler fabric, which is Paradise Garden in Wine also from the Love collection and then I have 2 Jeanean Morrison fabrics from the California Dreamin collection, namely Santa Rosa Orange and Catalina Blue. I just love these names!

Just looking at fabric makes my mind go a million miles an hour, particularly if it's strong colored and the design just pops. I'm just not sure I'm ready to cut into it yet, right now I'm just happy looking at it.

All of this fabric is available on my Etsy Shop with Free Shipping to all Europe and very low costs for everywhere else.


Efectivamente a encomenda veio toda trocada. Eu não encomendei o Cypress Paisley in Lima da Amy Butler, eu encomendei em Vermelho, assim como um dos meus tecidos favoritos, o Wall Flower da colecção Lotus, confesso que fiquei um bocadinho chateada...
Mas agora acho que todos os tecidos combinam bem, portanto vou ter que esperar e ver se estava destinado a ser assim.
Recebi também outro tecido da Amy Butler, também da colecção Love, chamado Pradise Garden in Red. Depois recebi também mais 2 tecidos da Jeanean Morrison da colecção California Dreamin, nomeadamente o Santa Rosa Orange e o Catalina Blue. Adoro estes nomes!!
Olhar para os tecidos põe a minha mente a mil à hora, especialmente se as cores e os padrões forem fortes. Só não sei se estou preparada para começar a cortar, neste momento fico contente só de olhar para eles.

I've been busy! ::: Andei ocupada!

Yesterday I managed to complete another project, that is now proudly featured on my Etsy Shop, hoping to find its owner.
Actually, make that 2 projects, since it's a set of two pillow cases.

Ontem completei outro projecto, que já está orgulhosamente em exposição na minha Loja do Etsy, à espera de encontrar o seu dono.
Aliás, são dois projectos, um conjunto de 2 fronhas de almofada.

I've actually made these two more as an example, because in fact, people can make their own combos, like Mr. and Mr. or Mrs. and Mrs. Customers cans also choose the colors for each pillow case and they can also choose a different heart from the ones that lay at the bottom of the pillow, it's meant to be a completely personal, costumized item. 
Again, I apliquéd the lettering, and the heart.

I still think I have to work on the photos, but I do think it's getting better, I actually added some new photos to the already existing listing... Oh yeah...about that... I had an expensive lesson that taught me all about the edit button, which I had never noticed before (Thanks Mädchen!). Can you believe that before that I actually deleted and relisted the items I wanted to edit? There's 20cents I'll never get back! Heheheh.

Fiz estas duas mais como um exemplo, porque de facto, as pessoas podem fazer as suas próprias combinaçóes, como Mr. e Mr., Mrs e Mrs. Os clientes podem ainda escolher as cores das almofadas e podem até escolher um coração diferentes de entre os que estão no fundo da almofada, é suposto ser um artigo completamente pessoal e costumizado.

Acho que ainda tenho muito trabalho a fazer com as fotos, mas acho que estou a melhorar. entretanto adicionei algumas fotos novas aos artigos já listados. Ah sim, acerca disso... tive uma aprendizagem algo cara que me ensinou acerca do botão edit, que nunca tinha reparado antes (Obrigada Mädchen!). Acreditam que antes disso eu apagava e voltava a listar os artigos que queria editar?? Ali estão 20 cêntimos que nunca vou recuperar! Hehehehe


In the meantime I made a brand new banner for my shop, don't really know if I'll stick with it or if it's still a work in progress. Only time will tell.

Entretanto criei uma nova faixa para a minha loja, não sei se será a versão definitiva ou um trabalho ainda em desenvolvimento. Só o tempo dirá.

Overall, I've been meaning to make my Etsy Shop a bit more personal. I guess I felt really intimidated by it at first, but gradually, I'm making some changes.
I've come to the conclusion that I need to show who I am, to make the shop look like an extension of me, so that when you visit you get to know me a little bit better.
I think this banner did just that, as it gathered so many of my favorite things in the whole World!
As for the coloring... what can I say? I'm completely in love with the sepia look, I just hope I haven't overdone it.

No geral, tenho tentado tornar a minha Loja no Etsy um pouco mais pessoa. Inicialmente senti-me muito intimidada, mas gradualmente tenho vindo a fazer algumas mudanças.
Cheguei à conclusão que preciso de mostrar quem eu sou e tornar a minha loja numa extensão de mim, para que quando a visitam passem a conhecer-me um pouco melhor.
Acho que esta faixa faz exactamente isso, já que reúne tantas das minhas coisas favoritas!
Quanto às cores, que posso dizer? Adoro sépia, só espero não ter exagerado.

I always loved this sort of article and it was the first time I tried making one and loved it! It's easy to make and you see results quickly which sometimes is important for me, otherwise, if I'm too tired, I tend to loose focus and start thinking of other projects.

As you can see, I' m not tired of this navy and red fabric, quite on the contrary, I'm always amazed at it's versatility. Also, if somebody wished to decorate a room for the romantic meal, they're pretty much covered.

Sempre adorei este tipo de artigo e foi a primeira vez que tentei fazer uma e adorei! é fácil de fazer e consigo ver resultados rapidamente, o que por vezes é importante para mim, senão, em alturas em que estou muito cansada, tendo a perder concentração e começo a pensar noutros projectos.

Como podem ver, não estou nada farta deste tecido, muito pelo contrário, fico sempre surpreendida com a sua versatilidade. Para além disso, se alguém quiser decorar uma divisão para uma refeição romântica, têm o pacote completo.

Here you can see in detail one of the squares, the first one acutally. I appliquéd the red letters and the chose a completely different fabric for the thread that holds all the squares, also one of my favorites. It matches one of the hearts of the bunting.

Aqui podem ver em detalhe um dos quadrados, o primeiro aliás. Apliquei as letras vermelhas e escolhi um tecido completamente diferente para o fio que segura os quadrados, também um dos meus favoritos. Também o usei num dos corações na faixa.

My Etsy firsts ::: Os meus primeiros artigos no Etsy

These are the listing I made on my Etsy shop yesterday. Hopefully I will be able to liste once every two days,but I also know that depending on the item and the time I have, it might be complicated...

The first one is the Love Love Love tablecloth. Let me just start by saying I suck at naming things, I'm very sorry for my unborn children, I can only hope that with pregnancy comes some sort of wisdom in that field.
Anyway, that's how I named it... It is sort of inspired in those lovely checkered tablecloths from the typical italian restaurantes, like the one in "Lady and the Tramp", when they kiss when eating spaguetti?

Estes são os artigos que eu listei na minha loja do Etsy ontem.
Espero conseguir listar regularmente de dois em dois dias, mas sei que dependendo do artigo em questão e do meu tempo livre, é capaz de ser complicado...

Este primeiro artigo é a toalha Love Love Love. Deixem-me começar por dizer que sou péssima a dar nomes. Tenho muita pena dos meus filhos ainda por nascer, só espero que com a gravidez eu adquira algum tipo de sabedoria nessa área.
De qualquer das formas, esse é o nome... é inspirada naquelas toalhas aos quadrados dos restaurantes típicos italianos, tipo o do filme "a Dama e o Vagabundo", quando eles se beijam enquanto comem esparguete?

To that I had to add my favourite fabrics,like some Amy Butler, among others. So I created cute little hearts, that I appliquéd and spread all over the tablecloth quite randomly, the only rule being not sewing red hearts on a red square.

À toalha adicionei alguns dos meus tecidos favoritos como Amy Butler, entre outros. Então criei uns pequenos corações que apliquei, espalhando por todaa toalha de uma forma completamente aleatória, a única regra era não aplicar corações vermelhos em tecido vermelho.

Then, I decided it would look even cuter if I embroidered the word love on the redsquares, on the different edge of the different red squares. 

Decidi então que ficaria ainda melhor se eu bordasse a palavra love na beira dos quadrados vermelhos, também aleatóriamente.

Here you can see the backing. I purposefully chose some thicker fabric, as well as some linen for the backing, as this tablecloth has a bit of a picnick ring to it, so I started imagining some late night meals by the fire and thought that for that, the backing needed to be sturdier. For the binding, I used a lot of different fabrics that were also present in the hearts, I loved the look of it and I think I'll be using this mixed fabric binding on a lot more projects from now on.

Aqui temos a parte de trás. Escolhi propositadamente tecidos mais grossos, assim como um bocado de linho, porque para mim esta toalha lembra-me um bocado os piqueniques, então comecei a imaginar uma refeição tardia, perto da lareira e pensei que para isso, a parte de trás tinha que ser mais resistente. Para finalizar, usei muitos dos diferentes tecidos que usei para os corações. Adorei o aspecto e penso que irei começar a usar mais frequentemente a mistura de tecidos para o binding de
agora em diante.

Within the same look and fabrics, I also made a set of 2 place mats and 2 coasters.
Dentro do mesmo aspecto e com os mesmos tecidos, fiz também um conjunto de 2 individuais com 2 bases para copos.

And there you have it, my very first listings. I hope you like them.

Hoje é um dia muito excitante para mim. Depois de MUITAS afinações, a minha nova loja no Etsy está aberta. Estou muito ansiosa para a encher, mas sei que é capaz de demorar algum tempo.
